The Nerve fiber Constitution of the Chorda Tympani distributed to the Salivary gland in the Cat

Abstract
It is well established that the Chorda tympani contains not only parasyrmpathetic cholinergic secretory fibers and vasodilator fibers to the salivary glands (submaxillary and sublingual glands) but also the specific sensory fiters to the tongue.
Recently, in spite of abundant literatures regarding the physiological funclion of this nerve, no attention has been paid to the nerve fiber constitution and the morphological characteristics of each nerve fiber of this nerve.
Anatomically, nerve fiber of the Chorda tympani to the salivary gland emerge from brain (superior salivary nucleus) in the sensory root of the facial nerve and reach to submaBillary and sublingual glands via the lingual nerve. Otherwise, specific sensory fibers of the Chorda tympani arise from the nerve cells in geniculate ganglion, whose peripheral branches carry taste from the anterior 2/3 of tongue via lingual nerve and central branches pass via the Nervus intermedius to the nucleus of the tractus solitaries.
Applying the Nakanishi¢¥s osmic acid staining method, studies were made on the nerve fiber constitution of the Chorda tympani to the salivary gland and lingual nerve trunk which contains the nerve fibers of the Chorda tympani Resulta obtained were as follows:
1) The Chorda tympani, parasyrnpathetic cholinergic fibers to the salivary gland was solely consisted of the small myelinated fibers (2-4m) and the number of the small myelinated fibers of this nerve was 441 (mean value in 5cats) The large myelinated fibers . (cerebrospinal nerve fibers) were not found.
2) The lingual nerve trunk and a sensory branch of lingual nerve were consisted of the somatic nerve fibers 5~20m) and the myelinated autanomic fiber (2~4m). The numher of the nerve fibers of the lingu1 nerve trunk were 2639(mean value in 5 cats). The ratio of the somatic and the myelinnted autonimic nerve fibers in th lingual nerve trunk was qpproximately 1:1.5.
